ADHD in Athletes Chicago

ADHD and athletics have a complicated relationship. For some athletes, the hyperfocus and intensity that come with ADHD are a competitive edge. For others, impulsivity, inconsistency, and difficulty with routine create real performance barriers and real frustration.

Either way, getting an ADHD evaluation from a psychiatrist who understands sport changes the entire conversation.

Standard ADHD evaluations were not designed with athletes in mind. Many screening tools miss the way ADHD symptoms interact with training, competition, and the structure of an athletic lifestyle. Athletes often compensate well enough in sport, where stimulation is high, but struggle outside of it. Some thrive in-season and fall apart in the off-season.

A sports-informed evaluation looks at the full picture, in including how symptoms show up on and off the field, how they affect training consistency and decision-making, and what interventions actually fit your life as an athlete.

Why ADHD Looks Different in Athletes

ADHD and Anti-Doping Compliance

If you compete in a sport governed by WADA or USADA anti-doping rules, stimulant medication for ADHD requires careful navigation. Some medications are prohibited in competition and require a Therapeutic Use Exemption. Others are permitted. Getting this wrong has real consequences.

At Good Wolf Wellness, we provide ADHD treatment with full awareness of anti-doping rules so you can manage your symptoms without putting your eligibility at risk. We can support the documentation process for TUE applications when clinically appropriate.

  • Comprehensive ADHD evaluation with sport context taken into account

  • Medication management with stimulant and non-stimulant options reviewed carefully

  • Anti-doping awareness and TUE support documentation

  • Non-medication strategies including behavioral structure, routine design, and performance psychology tools

  • Ongoing medication management and follow-up
